Começo, meio e fim
In this lesson, you will put the past tenses together to tell a story with a start, a middle and an end, and to react to one.
The parts of a story
| Part | Portuguese | English |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Uma vez... | One time... |
| Start | Tudo começou quando... | It all started when... |
| Middle | Aí... | Then... (in speech) |
| Middle | Foi quando... | That was when... |
| Middle | De repente... | Suddenly... |
| End | No fim... | In the end... |
| End | Moral da história... | The moral of the story... |
Three tenses, one story
- The imperfect sets the scene: eu estava cansada.
- The perfect moves the story forward: dormi.
- Tinha + participle goes back in time: eu tinha deixado o celular no ônibus.
O celular perdido
Uma vez, eu estava voltando do trabalho de ônibus e estava muito cansada. Aí, dormi. Quando acordei, já tinha passado do meu ponto! Desci correndo e, de repente, percebi que estava sem o celular. Eu tinha deixado o celular no banco do ônibus. Foi quando um senhor parou do meu lado e perguntou: "É este aqui?" Ele tinha descido atrás de mim só para me devolver o celular. No fim, nós tomamos um café e ficamos amigos. Moral da história: ainda existe gente boa neste mundo.
When you are listening
A Brazilian story needs a listener who reacts:
- Sério? (Really?)
- Não acredito! (I can't believe it!)
- E aí? (And then?)
- Nossa! (Wow!)
Pay attention! Aí also means there, but in a story it means then. Brazilians use it all the time in conversation, but not in formal writing.
