The past before the past

Use tinha and a past participle for something that happened before another moment in the past, like English had done.

falarcomer
eu, você, ele, ela, a gentetinha faladotinha comido
nóstínhamos faladotínhamos comido
vocês, eles, elastinham faladotinham comido

The participle ends in -ado for -ar verbs and -ido for -er and -ir verbs. These are irregular:

When to use it

  • Quando cheguei, o filme já tinha começado.
  • Eu nunca tinha visto o mar.
  • Ela já tinha saído quando você ligou.
  • Ninguém tinha me avisado.

Compare the two moments:

  • Quando cheguei, o filme começou: I arrived, then it started.
  • Quando cheguei, o filme tinha começado: it started, then I arrived.

A primeira viagem do João

Pay attention! Já and nunca come before tinha, and nothing goes between tinha and the participle: já tinha feito.
