When you meet a friend after some time, the chat often starts like this:

A novidade is a piece of news. In the plural, novidades means the news in your life.

Pay attention! E aí? is a greeting, not a real question. You can just answer E aí! or Tudo bem! For real news, wait for Quais são as novidades?
