At passport control
When you arrive in Brazil, the officer may speak English. Still, these questions are easy to learn, and a few words in Portuguese always help:
| The officer asks | You answer |
|---|---|
| Bom dia. Passaporte, por favor. | Bom dia. |
| Qual é o motivo da viagem? | Turismo. Sou turista. |
| Quantos dias? | Dez dias. |
| Onde você vai ficar? | No hotel. |
| Bem-vindo ao Brasil! | Obrigado! |
Why are you here?
A one-word answer is fine:
- Turismo.
- Trabalho.
- Estudo.
- Família.
Saying how long
Use the numbers you know, plus dias. For just one day, say um dia:
- Cinco dias.
- Quinze dias.
- Vinte dias.
All together
- Bom dia. Passaporte, por favor.
- Bom dia. Sou turista.
- Quantos dias?
- Quinze dias. Eu vou ficar no hotel.
- Bem-vindo ao Brasil!
- Obrigado! Boa tarde!
If you do not understand
Nobody expects a perfect answer at the airport. These two phrases are enough to ask for help:
- Desculpa, não entendo.
- Você fala inglês?
Pay attention! A man says obrigado, and a woman says obrigada. The officer will also say bem-vindo to a man and bem-vinda to a woman. Visa rules depend on your passport, so check them before you travel.
