A first chat
At a party, in a class or at a friend's house, a first chat often sounds like this:
- Oi! Tudo bem?
- Tudo bem, e você?
- Eu sou a Ana. Como você se chama?
- Eu sou o Tom. Prazer!
- Prazer! De onde você é?
- Eu sou de Toronto.
Saying your name to friends
You already know meu nome é. With new friends, most Brazilians say eu sou and often add a before a woman's name and o before a man's name:
| Woman | Man |
|---|---|
| Eu sou a Ana. | Eu sou o Tom. |
Como você se chama? is a friendly way to ask someone's name. Qual é o seu nome? means the same and is a little more neutral.
Introducing a friend
| Man | Woman |
|---|---|
| amigo | amiga |
| meu amigo | minha amiga |
| Este é o Tom, meu amigo. | Esta é a Ana, minha amiga. |
Use este é for a man and esta é for a woman.
Keep the chat going
- Eu sou de São Paulo. E você?
- Que legal!
- Tchau, até logo!
Pay attention! Brazilians often greet new friends with a hug or a kiss on the cheek, and the number of kisses changes from city to city. If you are not sure what to do, let the other person lead.
