The present tense of -ar verbs
Most Portuguese verbs end in -ar. To use them, take off -ar and add the ending of the person:
| Person | Ending | Falar (to speak) |
|---|---|---|
| eu | -o | falo |
| você, ele, ela | -a | fala |
| nós | -amos | falamos |
| vocês, eles, elas | -am | falam |
New pronouns: nós = we, vocês = you (more than one person), eles = they (men, or a mixed group), elas = they (only women).
Examples
- Eu trabalho em São Paulo.
- Ela mora no Rio.
- Nós estudamos português.
- Vocês falam inglês?
- Eles chegam às nove.
To say no, put não before the verb: Eu não trabalho no sábado.
Pay attention! Portuguese has no word for do in questions. The question is the same sentence with a rising voice: Você mora aqui?
